Etiquette and Table Manners

Place Setting

Plates are positioned one inch from the table edge. Forks (maximum three) are placed on the left in order of use. Knives go on the right with cutting edges toward the plate. Dessert fork and spoon are above the place plate — the bowl of the spoon facing left, the fork below facing right.

Glassware

No more than four glasses should be set, arranged by use order for water, white wine, red wine, and champagne from left to right.

Eating Technique

Grasp your knife and fork in a relaxed, natural manner, never with clenched fists. The American style involves switching the fork to the right hand after cutting; the Continental style keeps the fork in the left hand throughout.

Dinner Function Etiquette

  • Arrive on time; dress according to the invitation
  • Place your napkin on your lap upon sitting
  • Follow your host's lead for ordering and wine selection
  • Keep beverages to the right, bread plate to the left

Finishing

Place your used silverware close together on the plate to signal completion of the meal to servers.
