About the Competition
The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Alberta Young Sommelier Competition began in 2018 as the only competition in Canada specifically designed to test and develop young Sommeliers and wine professionals.
Competition History
- 2018: First competition with six participants; Evan Watson from Bar Clementine (Edmonton) won the inaugural title and $1,000
- 2019: Twelve competitors; Kevin Milne of Chateau Lake Louise claimed first place
- 2022: Six contestants; Julian Simard-Gillis (Post Hotel, Lake Louise) won and competed internationally in Germany
- 2023: Three competitors; Marianna Pirhalova (The Guild) took first place
- 2024: Expanded to national scope with entrants from Montreal, Kelowna, and Calgary; Maxwell Bryer won and competed in Portugal
- 2025: Candidates from Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, and the Okanagan; Grant Bronconnier won first place
2026 Competition
The 2026 Canadian competition features two stages: a written theory exam on February 21, 2026 (in-person or proctored), and a practical service and blind tasting stage on March 28 in Calgary. The Canadian winner will compete in the International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition in Båstad, Sweden (October 14–18, 2026).
